Welcome to Washington University in St. Louis!
The Engineering Student Council (EnCouncil) has put together a lot of great activities to welcome you and help you adjust to life in the Engineering School. We hope you have a great time and enjoy the exciting events that are planned!
These events are also listed in your orientation booklet when you arrive on campus.
Events marked with a red star are required for all freshmen.
Events marked with a blue exclamation point are EnCouncil events, and are strongly encouraged!
Thursday, August 20th
8:30am-5pm - Move-In for Freshmen.
Welcome! Check in at your Residental College - Orientation and ResLife staff will be there to greet you.

Friday, August 21st
8:30am - Associate Dean's Meeting ![]()

Meet with Associate Dean of Students, Chris Kroeger, as he welcomes you to the School of Engineering and discusses important academic and registration policies. He will also discuss the services provided by the office of Engineering Student Services
10:30am - Lunch with Engineering Peer and Faculty Advisers ![]()
Lopata Gallery or Whitaker Atrium
Enjoy a pizza lunch and get to know your peer and faculty advisors. Discuss registration, academics, and campus life and get your questions answered! You may also schedule an individual appointment with your faculty advisor for Monday or Tuesday.

Saturday, August 22nd
9am - Writing Placement Test
Whitaker Hall, Room 100
Students who have not satisfied the English Composition proficiency requirement (most students) are required to take this writing plcaement exam. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to check in, and bring pens or sharpened pancils.
1pm - Dean's Meeting ![]()

The Dean of the Engineering School, Salvatore Sutera, will be presenting information on academic life and planning your program of study while at Washington University.
2:45pm - Combined Studies Meeting
Simon Hall, May Auditorium
This meeting is for all first-year students interested in learning more about combined studies, including getting degrees from two schools or majoring in two schools. There will be a general informational meeting followed by breakout sessions with presentations from each of the undergraduate schools.
3:45pm - Study Abroad Meeting
Rebstock Hall, Room 215
Learn about opportunities to study abroad and how an international experience can enhance your academic curriculum. The School of Engineering has more study abroad programs than ever - learn about them at the Engineering Study Abroad website.
10:30pm - Engineering Induction ![]()
Meet at Brookings Quad
Join the tradition as you officially become a Wash U Engineer!! This journey will take you through a series of fun team challenges as you learn who we are and what we do. Dress appropriately - there will be paint!
Sunday, August 23rd
1pm - Pre-Med Meeting
Whitaker Hall, Room 100
Thinking ahead to medical school? Explore your options and how your undergraduate years in the Engineering school can prepare you with Dr. Frame Yin of the Biomedical Engineering department. Richard Brand, Health Professions Advisor for Engineering, will also be on hand to answer questions.
5pm - Advising Dinner outing
Meet at the Sever Arch
Join your peer advisor and fellow Wash U Engineers for dinner out on the town. Don't forget your U-Pass!
Monday, August 24th
10am - Computer Science Placement Exam
Cupples II Hall, Room 217
This exam is for students with significant computer science background and programming experience, regardless of intended major. The test is used to determine students' proper placement in the comptuer science curriculum. The test is closed books and closed notes; please bring a sharpened pencil.
10am - Individual Faculty Advising Meetings

Have a question for your faculty advisor? Need more time to get things worked out? This is your chance for a 1-on-1 meeting with your faculty advisor. (Don't worry, if you're taking the placement test, there's also time on Tuesday!)

Join your peer advisor and EnCouncil members for a team scavenger hunt to learn your way around the Engineering School. You'll never be lost again! Amazing prizes!
4pm - Engineering Student Services and Activities Fair ![]()
Engineering Complex
Learn more about Engineering student groups and meet members of Engineering Student Services while you enjoy a treat from the ice cream truck. Be sure to pick up your free t-shirt!
